Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this word counter?

Very accurate. Words are split on whitespace boundaries, handling hyphens, contractions, and numbers correctly. Sentence detection uses standard punctuation (. ! ?) and paragraph detection uses blank-line breaks β€” the same rules used by Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

Does the character count include spaces?

Yes β€” we show both. "Characters" includes every character including spaces. "Chars (no spaces)" strips all whitespace. The latter is what Twitter, Instagram, and most character-limit platforms actually count.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time uses the widely-cited average of 200 words per minute (wpm) for silent adult reading. Speaking time uses 130 wpm β€” the standard for presentations and podcasts. Both are displayed in minutes and seconds for precision.

What is the Flesch Readability Score?

The Flesch Reading Ease score (0–100) measures how easy your text is to read. Higher = simpler. Scores 60–70 are considered 'standard' for general web content. The formula considers sentence length and syllable count: longer sentences and polysyllabic words lower the score.

What is keyword density and why does it matter?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a specific word appears relative to the total word count. SEO professionals aim for 1–3% density for primary keywords. Too low and search engines may not associate your page with that term; too high is flagged as keyword stuffing.

Is my text private? Do you store it?

100% private. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is ever sent to our servers, stored in a database, or shared with any third party. The moment you close the tab, the text is gone.

Does this word counter work for languages other than English?

Yes for counting β€” word count, character count, sentence count, and paragraph count work with any language that uses spaces between words. Readability scoring and keyword density are currently optimized for English text.

What is a good word count for a blog post?

For SEO, most studies suggest 1,500–2,500 words for a typical blog post, and 3,000–10,000 words for comprehensive pillar content. Short-form posts (300–600 words) still rank if they answer a specific query concisely. Quality and relevance always outweigh raw word count.
